Mrs. Welcomer's Class News

Dear K2 Families,

Thanks again to all the parent volunteers that helped make our Halloween Workshops run smoothly. I really appreciate your time and support! The parade was definitely the highlight of my day! The children were so proud! Thanks for making Halloween a memorable day!

You will find two special homework assignments for your child for the month of November in your child's Friday bag. The first one is their November reading log and letter fluency practice, the second one is a fun thankful turkey feather art project to be done as a family. All the directions are attached to the feather. Please return the completed feather as soon as you can so your child can share it with our class. We will display the feathers on a class turkey.

In art this week the artists worked on values and colors and explored the world of mushrooms! Thank you families for supporting LPIE! The children are all so grateful for these amazing lessons taught by our amazing, credentialed art teacher Ms. Valerey.

In math this week we practiced counting. The more experience children have with counting, the more they will learn the meaning of numbers. Understanding the meaning of numbers takes experience with counting lots of things. You can help at home too by giving your child this experience regularly. We learned lots of ways to count accurately. Some included; crossing things out, moving objects, making groups, and of course touching things as you count. We also had fun graphing and used pattern blocks to create Halloween scenes.

In reading this week we worked a lot with Red Words. We looked for them in our readers, and practiced writing them. Many of these words can be sounded out, but the “stop sign” words have different spelling patterns and the reader needs to “stop and think” about the word. We are finishing up our first Red Word (sight word) unit next week. I will be sending home a new list for home practice soon.

Your child is bringing a group of readers home that we have been reading during the past weeks. Some of the books are poems, others informational text and others focus on a red word or spelling patterns. Please keep these in a place that your child can read them with you and add more books to their collection over the months ahead!

On Monday we had pumpkin science! Ms. Spain had lots of engaging and fun pumpkin activities for the scientists. Every child brought home their very own pumpkin! A huge thank you to Eliza and Fisher’s family for getting all the pumpkins for our class! I know this took a lot of effort!

On Friday, November 7th, every student at Springhill will take part in a sponsored run/walk event called "The Rainbow Run" during school hours! This is Springhill's biggest giving campaign of the year, where every single dollar contributed goes straight back into our wonderful school. All kinders are invited to wear the color RED. Kindergarten students will be running from 9:40-10:00. Please come and cheer us on!

Have a safe Halloween, and I will see everyone on Monday- Katherine
